In reaction to the news that the three al-Jazeera journalistsMohammed Fahmy, Baher Mohammed and Peter Greste have been sentenced to three years in prison for operating without a press licence and broadcasting material harmful to Egypt after a retrial, Ann Harrison, Director of PEN International's Writers in Prison Committee said,
'It's astonishing that the three men have been convicted and that Mohammed Fahmy and Baher Mohammed are back behind bars. These men should never have been imprisoned in the first place and this conviction only goes to demonstrate the ongoing erosion of press freedom in Egypt. We urge the authorities to release Mohammed Fahmy and Baher Mohammed immediately and unconditionally.'
Peter Greste was sentenced in absentia following his deportation from Egypt in February.
