PEN International to move to Bluesky, discontinuing use of X

27 February 2025: PEN International, alongside several PEN Centres, is moving away from X (formerly Twitter) and will be using Bluesky to replace it for our social media presence. While our X account will remain active, we will no longer post there and will direct our efforts to Bluesky alongside our other platforms, including Instagram and Facebook.

For some time, we have been assessing the challenges of using X, including the increasing spread of misinformation, extremist content, and the erosion of safeguards against hate speech. Since Elon Musk took over, X has shifted from promoting open discussion to a more polarised platform, with rising misinformation and extremist content. Changes to moderation and the algorithm have amplified division, while Musk's ties to Trump raise concerns about its political influence. Weakened safety measures have also made it less reliable for fact-based dialogue.

As a result, we have decided to move to Bluesky, as it offers a growing, decentralised alternative. Our decision reflects our commitment to “unhampered transmission of thought within each nation and between all nations”, freedom of expression, open debate, and responsible digital spaces.

As per PEN International’s Charter, PEN members “should at all times use what influence they have in favour of good understanding and mutual respect between nations and people; they pledge themselves to do their utmost to dispel all hatreds and to champion the ideal of one humanity living in peace and equality in one world”. Upholding and recalling our Charter at this time remains crucial.
