Mohamed Magani

Algerian PEN was established in 2003 at a time of great political unrest in Algeria. Many of the writers who became members were in hiding or exile at the time meaning that the Centre was created without them actually meeting face to face. Over the last two years the political situation has improved and the members have been able to hold meetings and begin setting the foundations for the Centre and future activities.

The Centre has recently begun a series of literary readings and workshops, funded through International PEN Programmes Fund, focusing on the teaching of literature and human rights in school and how to develop a reading and public literary culture.
