Ghanaian PEN was established in 1994 and was the first African PEN Centre to introduce and establish a creative writing programme for students in 1998, by forming PEN Youth Clubs in senior secondary schools in Ghana. The PEN Youth Club initiative was later adopted by PEN International’s Assembly of Delegates at the 2001 Congress and since then many centre have replicated programme. Currently, there are over 60 PEN Youth Clubs inaugurated and operating in senior high schools throughout Ghana. The Centre hosted the African Regional Conference in 2005 at which the programmatic priorities including the formation of a regional network were discussed.
