PEN Jordan condemns the assassination of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, Al-Jazeera correspondent in Palestine, by Israeli occupation forces while covering the incursion of the Israeli army into the Jenin camp on Wednesday morning, 11 May 2022. Abu Akleh died immediately after being shot in the head by an Israeli sniper.
Members of PEN Jordan express their anger and denunciation of this heinous crime. Abu Akleh was a renowned journalist who covered the occupied Palestinian territories for more than two decades with integrity and high professionalism. PEN Jordan demands an international investigation into this crime and holds the occupying State of Israel and its army fully responsible for the crimes. The death of Abu Akleh exposes Israel’s violation of international law on the protection of journalists in conflict and war zones.
