Global Compact on Migration: PEN International and ICORN

PEN International and the ICORN Side Event

9 December 2018, 1745-1945 – Palmeraie Golf Palace, Room Atlas 2

Global Compact on Migration Intergovernmental Conference, Marrakesh

Background

PEN International is the world’s leading association of writers working to defend freedom of expression and support writers at risk. Many writers at risk face persecution for their writings and have to go into protection programmes in exile – such as PEN’s protection programme which works in partnership with the International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN). ICORN is an independent organisation of cities and regions offering shelter to writers and artists at risk, advancing freedom of expression, defending democratic values and promoting international solidarity.

The PEN International & ICORN side event will take place in advance of the intergovernmental meeting to adopt the Global Compact on Migration on Sunday 9 December at the Palmeraie Golf Resort. Translation into French and Arabic will be available. The two-hour panel event framed around PEN International’s Make Space campaign, brings together respected ICORN writers and activists Asieh Amini and Abduljabbar Alsuhili; Dr Regula Venske, author and President of German PEN; Helge Lunde, Executive Director of ICORN; Juan Diego Catalano, Human Rights and Migration Consultant to the Mayor of Palermo and Sarah Clarke, Advocacy Manager of PEN International to discuss key themes relating to the Global Compact:

* How can we best protect the human rights of writers and journalists who have experienced forced displacement?

* How can we create legal pathways to protect writers who need to migrate?

* How can we challenge public perceptions around migration and fulfill the cultural rights of displaced writers?
