Mexico: PEN Centres condemn the murder of journalist Carlos Domínguez in Tamaulipas state

PEN Mexico and PEN San Miguel de Allende condemn the murder of journalist Carlos Domínguez in Tamaulipas state

15 January 2018 – Only a few days ago, PEN Mexico decried the deplorable beginning to 2018, filled with violence and threats against journalists across the country. Unfortunately, the attacks continue: on Saturday 13 January, journalist Carlos Domínguez, a resident of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas state, was killed.

Domínguez was reportedly killed between 15:00 and 16:00, as he was driving with his daughter. Domínguez recently began working as an independent journalist, publishing a political column on social media, which was being picked up by various media outlets. He had previously worked for El Diario de Nuevo Laredo.

In his last column, he referred to the shameful climate for freedom of expression in Mexico.

PEN Mexico and PEN San Miguel de Allende condemn this murder, and call on the authorities at all levels, in line with the state government’s commitments, to apprehend those responsible and bring them to justice.

Each and every citizen’s right to freedom of expression should be respected, especially by the authorities and those in power in Mexico
