Shakthika Sathkumara writes to Shahidul Alam

Award-winning writer and poet, Shakthika Sathkumara, faces legal proceedings that could see him sentenced to up to 10 years in prison, should the Attorney General decide to press charges. On 1 April 2019, Sathkumara was detained pending a police investigation into allegations that his short story ‘Ardha’ (‘Half’) incited religious hatred. Sathkumara spent over 120 days in detention before his release on bail on 8 August 2019. His next hearing before the Magistrate is due to take place on 19 May 2020.

Sathkumara was one of five cases PEN International selected to highlight on 15 November 2019, the Day of the Imprisoned Writer. World-renowned photographer and writer, Shahidul Alam, who was himself a focus case for Day of the Imprisoned Writer in 2018, wrote a letter to Sathkumara offering a message of hope and solidarity.

In response, Sathkumara writes to thank him for his words of solidarity.

Your letter gave me oxygen. I respect your views on and activism for defending freedom of expression and questioning.

I think it is only a critical writer who can negate the assertion of the religious extremists that everything should be accepted without questioning.

The repression I am facing is not limited to this country alone. Free thinkers in all capitalist countries are facing this problem. We are being driven to a magical world of after-life beyond the objective world, to hide the real causes of the social catastrophe of the crisis-ridden capitalist system. To meet this end, religion and the religious establishment has been a critical tool for the bourgeois ruling class. They have used religion as a weapon to defend their predatory system.

In countries like ours, even the Constitution has given religion the foremost place. This is a legal weapon used by the ruling class to divide the oppressed masses along racial and religious lines and defend capitalist rule. The ruling class is consciously cultivating lies, social and cultural backwardness and reaction against the masses. So, the attacks on journalist Julian Assange, who is being hunted due to his exposure of the crimes of US imperialism, and on yourself and myself are essentially political.

At present I am only half free. That is I am on bail. I am in danger of being indicted and then jailed for up to ten years. As a writer, this is a kind of mental anguish for me. But I will continue this struggle for freedom of thought, expression and art. I thank you for standing with thousands of conscious people who support my struggle.

ආගමික අන්තවාදය විසින් සිදු කරනු ලබන ප‍්‍රශ්න නොකර සෑම දේ පිළිගත යුතු යැයි යන මතය නිශේදනය කළ හැක්කේ විවේචනාත්ලේමක ලේඛකයෙකුට පමණක් යැයි සිතමි. මා මුහුණ දෙමින් සිටින මර්දනය මෙරටට පමණක් පොදු වූවක් නොවේ. ධනේෂ්වර රාජ්‍යයන් සියල්ලේම නිවහල් චින්තකයින් මෙම ගැටලූවට මුහුණ දී ඇති බව පෙනේ. අර්බුද ග්‍රස්ථ ධනේෂ්වර ක්‍රමයේ සමාජ ව්‍යවසනයට සැබෑ හේතු සඟවනු වස් අප මරණින් එහා මායා ලෝකයක් වෙත කැඳවාගෙන යෑම සිදු වේ. මේ සඳහා ධනේෂ්වර පාලක පන්තියට ප‍්‍රයෝජනවත් උපකරණයක් වී ඇත්තේ ආගම හා ආගමික සංස්ථාවයි. ඔවුන් තමන්ගේ කොල්ලකාරී ක‍්‍රමය රැකගැනීම සඳහා ආගම අවියක් කොට ගෙන ඇත. අප වැනි රටවල ව්‍යවස්ථාවෙන් පවා ආගමට ප‍්‍රමුඛස්ථානයක් දී ඇත. මෙය කම්කරු පොදු පීඩිත මහජනතාව වාර්ගික හා ආගමික රේඛා ඔස්සේ බෙදා වෙන්කර ධනපති පාලන බලය රැකගැනීම සඳහා යොදා ගන්නා නෛතික අවියකි. ව්‍යවස්ථාවක් මගින් ආරක්ෂා කරනු ලැබිය යුත්තේ සර්ව සාධාරනත්වය, සමානාත්මතාවය ඇතුලු ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රීය අයිතීන්ය. පාලක පන්තිය දැනුවත්වම මහජනතාවට එරෙහිව මුසාව, සමාජ හා සංස්කෘතික පසුගාමීත්වය සහ ප්‍රතිගාමීත්වය වගා කරයි. ඒ හෙයින්, ඇමරිකානු අධිරාජ්‍යවාදයේ අපරාධ හෙලිදරවි කිරීම නිසා දඩයමට ලක්ව සිටින මාධ්‍යවේදී ජුලියන් අසාන්ජ්ට, ඔබට මෙන්ම මට ද එරෙහි ප්‍රහාරය අතිශයින් දේශපාලනිකය.

දැනට මා නිදහස ලබා ඇත්තේ අර්ධවය. එනම් මා සිටින්නේ ඇප මතයි. මට එරෙහිව අධිචෝදනා ගොනුකරනු ලැබීමේත්, අනතුරුව වසර දහයක් දක්වා සිරදඩුවම් පැනවීමේත් අන්තරායකට මම මුහුන දී සිටිමි. මෙය ලේඛකයෙක් වශයෙන් එක්තරා ආකාරයට මට මානසික වදයකි. නමුත් සීතීමේ, ප‍්‍රකාශනයේ සහ කලාව් නිදහස වෙනුවෙන් මේ අරගලය ඉදිරියටම ගෙන යමි. මාගේ සටනට සහාය දෙන දහසකුත් දැනුවත් මහජනතාවක් සමඟ ඔබ සිට ගැනීම ගැන මම ඔබට තුති පුදමි.
