PEN PROTEST | DAY OF THE DEAD 2021 | #WordsNoBullets
From 31 October to 4 November, during the Day of the Dead Campaign and the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, PEN Centres in Latin America remember journalists killed in the exercise of their profession.
From 2018 to 2021, PEN documented at least 52 murders in the region; 38 occurred in Mexico.
PEN Protest - Day of the Dead is a campaign by PEN International and PEN Centres in Latin America to commemorate journalists killed in retaliation for their work. This campaign highlights that more than 90% of the investigations into the crimes remain unpunished.
From 31 October to 4 November 2021, journalists, writers and PEN centres in Mexico (San Miguel de Allende, Chiapas and Guadalajara), Honduras, Ecuador, Guatemala, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, and Nicaraguan journalists in exile, call on Latin American governments, and especially the Mexican government, to stop the persecution, violence and murders against journalists and writers and to shed light on the crimes.
PEN International recorded the murder of at least 53 journalists in connection with their professional work in Latin America from 2018 to 2021; 38 of those crimes occurred in Mexico. 2 November also marks the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, declared by the United Nations in 2013.
The Latin American PEN Centres will carry out - virtually and in person - altars, poetry recitals, conferences, theatrical and musical performances, videos, webinars, and other events that will seek to become a call for this climate of impunity and aggression to stop in all countries of the region, allowing the free exercise of reporting, dissent and opinion.
