Vacancy: MENA Digital Campaigner (Civil Society Programme)

Post: 3 days per week for 6 months (renewable subject to funding)

Remuneration: Pro rata - full time equivalent £27,000

Reporting to: Regional Coordinator MENA region

Purpose of the role

The purpose of the role is to support the development of PEN’s Middle East and North Africa programme in particular to increase its public profile and its digital campaigning on behalf of persecuted writers in the region.

This post is largely a communications role, to develop content for campaigning in the MENA region and to build the capacity of PEN’s membership and PEN Centres in the region. The post holder will work closely with PEN’s International Programmes and Communications teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake research on writers at risk
  • Develop and execute creative and engaging digital campaigns on behalf of persecuted writers
  • Ensure that all campaigns developed and executed have a gender element where possible
  • Maintain and boost PEN International’s social media platforms for the region and manage social media accounts
  • Work closely with the Regional Coordinator to enhance the online presence of Centres through websites, social media channels and other platforms
  • Support PEN Centres with the development and delivery of online projects (e.g. workshops, panels and events)
  • Develop and maintain PEN’s media contacts for the region
  • Create reports by analysing data and insights using Google Analytics, Meltwater, and other media listening tools
  • Work with the Regional Coordinator to identify opportunities for digital campaigns
  • Develop and maintain PEN’s newsletter on the MENA region
  • Keep up to date with developments in digital products and tech
  • Work with colleagues in other teams as necessary

Personal specification

  • Experience of developing compelling and influential campaigns
  • Experience working in the MENA region
  • Understanding of Freedom of Expression issues and familiarity with international human rights law
  • Experience of working with a range of digital platforms
  • Experience of updating and maintaining websites using a CMS
  • Experience of producing engaging video content
  • Experience of writing and editing web content on complex or sensitive topics
  • Understanding of digital security issues
  • Experience of analysing and interpreting data from a range of data sources
  • Experience of using digital tools to work collaboratively and productively
  • Familiarity with GDPR

Skills required

  • Fluency in Arabic and English; strong writing skills in Arabic is essential
  • Outstanding digital campaigning skills
  • Skilled in researching, writing and reviewing content for different audiences
  • Experience and all-round knowledge of digital products and platforms
  • Excellent IT skills with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and the ability to troubleshoot various IT problems
  • Excellent organisational skills and understanding of the work of human rights organisations
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships both with third parties and colleagues
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • A willingness to contribute new ideas
  • Familiarity with HTML/CSS/XML and other coding languages desirable
